The RMS Queen Elizabeth conjures connotation of patriotic glamour and luxury dating back over 70 years and still going strong today. After the depression of the 1920’s the hull of her sister, Queen Victoria, was left almost derelict at Clydebank. Salvation came after Cunard was offered a government issued loan on the provision they teamed up with the faltering White Star company, this enabled work to not only continue on the abandoned Queen Victoria but also on a new ship, the RMS Queen Elizabeth too..

The maiden journey of the Queen Elizabeth was originally set to be one of pomp and circumstance. With the outbreak of the Second World War, her original designation as a luxury liner was put on hold whilst she aided the war efforts. After being credited by Churchill as being a significant help in the war efforts both the regal liners returned home relatively unscathed. It wasn’t until the mid 40’s that both the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary were able to begin their original commission as ocean liners. For over 20 years these magnificent ships sailed the Atlantic symbolising the golden era of the cruise industry for Cunard Cruises.

It wasn’t until the end of the 1960’s that both ships were replaced in an attempt to keep up with the times. With transportation like air travel become more accessible, sea travel needed to become both cheaper and quicker to keep up. In 1969 the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) was launched. Although smaller and cheaper than her predecessor, the QE2 still retained the glamour associated with a Cunard liner allowing her to compete with the air travel industry. After being the flag ship of not only Cunard cruises but the epitome of luxury 5 star cruises in general, she was brought by a Dubai investment company in 2007. The uncertain financial future of Dubai has halted the original plans to convert it into an opulent floating hotel. As the crew who were commissioned to work on her were scaled back, she now lies almost derelict.

Cunard recently announced that work has started on the next Elizabeth cruise ship. With the launch of the MS Queen Elizabeth expected in the autumn of 2010 it’s promised to be the very embodiment of five star cruises and one of the most advanced ships on the water. Said to have the essence of the 1930’s in its interior decor it will exemplify the spirit and the class of its name sake predecessor.

Each year going on holiday seem to get harder and harder. Between natural disasters, terror threats and strikes, the stress of just getting on a plane can warrant a holiday in itself. Of course you don’t have to leave the country; we normally manage at least one or two weeks of half decent weather.

One option that not only circumnavigates these obstacles but actually provides a perfectly enjoyable holiday is a cruise. These days there’s such an electric offering available from destination to style to budget and theme you’re bound to find something perfect for you. Whether you’re after the luxury of Silversea cruises or the opulence of the Oceania cruises or simply a few days peace and quiet, a cruise could be just what you’re after

If you’ve decided to take the plunge and you’re about to book your first cruise here’s a few things to think about first. Trying to plan a cruise on a budget is perfectly feasible so long as it’s a reasonable budget. You can cut costs by sourcing and booking everything yourself but if you can afford it book through a cruise travel specialist. They’ll be able to offer you their expert advice on everything from specific cruise operators through to locations and activities that might suit you. They’re also likely to be able to offer you some last minute discount five star cruises too. Always remember they’re probably on commission so always double check their advice with a good old Google. You can also use the internet to check what other people have to say about where you’re planning on going and who you’re planning on going with. In an attempt to save money you’ll probably be asked to print your own tickets and paperwork yourself, unless your travel agent will do this for you. If you do have to print your own paperwork, it’s best not to leave it till the day you travel just in case. If you have to fly to your port and the flights are through the cruise provider you have the added safety of knowing they’ll be able to help if you’re delayed or anything goes wrong. If the plane is delayed the liner will probably wait for you or help get you to the next port if a good proportion of their passenger list is also on the plane with you.

A well planned cruise can offer the holiday of a lifetime with experiences you’ll never forget. You’ll find you have a lot more contact with your neighbours than you might in a normal hotel, the walls are thinner and they’ll be less chance to get away from them if you feel the need. Always try to extend the common courtesy you’d like to receive in return and make sure you have a great holiday.

I was recently talking to a neighbour of mine who owns a very impressive camper van which is why I have decided to write this article, his name is John. John and his wife work for a pet insurance company and John also works as an IBM Distributor on a part-time basis. They are from the West Midlands and they reside in a small flat which is what they refer to as their UK base. They plan to travel around different parts of the UK as well as visiting other countries in the world.

I must admit that I would love to do a similar thing to enable me to have a break from the stresses and strains of running a Sheffield Gym.

John and his wife have two wonderful dogs which they adore. They have never enjoyed leaving these dogs with friends or in kennels when they have been travelling in the past and now they do not have to, as there is plenty of room of course in the camper van.

When talking with John I asked him where he was planning to travel to next. “I am planning to drive South on the M5 towards the SW Coast of England”. He would tour through parts of Devon and Cornwall stopping for a few days in different areas. I asked him what day he would be returning, he stated that he was not sure and that it would depend on the weather. Maybe one week or four, I am not sure yet Steve, he said. I could not believe his attitude and his lifestyle, I have to say I was very jealous. What freedom, I thought to myself.

John continued that he plans to travel to Portugal in the next weeks but that there is no rush – it seems to me as if John never rushes anything! This is an important lesson that I need to learn. I wish I had started to do this years ago, but what with work it was impossible really, he continued.

I also have a dog and would love to have this form of travel freedom. I have spoken to my wife about it and she has said that she would prefer to stop in a hotel. Oh well, I have years before I retire to try to work her around to my way of thinking.

Like a monument to the end of Antarctica’s age of innocence, the cruise ship’s badly gashed orange hull rises out of ice blue waters. Upon the overturned vessels, penguins perch calmly oblivious to the danger found in the thin oily layer glistening around. Much of the diesel fuel, in tens of thousands of gallons are spilling out more than ever even as some of it evaporated already. Go to this site for further information on Antarctic Cruising Tours.

At the final frontier of this planet, times are rapidly changing. Countries interested in reinforcing their claims to a portion of the Frozen Continent, they send in numerous bulldozers, amphibious trucks and even ships or aircraft. Bit by nationalistic fanfare, new bases are build and research efforts fortified. Every austral summer week, well heeled tourists come in hundreds aboard cruise ships, military transport planes or supply vessels as arranged by specialized agencies for travel.

The Earth’s final frontier requires no passport so private yachts and polar skiing expeditions are able to bring people into this place with much ease. As the countless hazardous icebergs throughout the uncharted seas of Antarctica, tons of political, legal and environmental questions punch the Earth’s final frontier and even presents harm to its wildlife take for instance, the case of the sunken cruise ship, unleashing diesel fuel that is known to be very poisonous. No laws apply to Antarctica because no one owns it, according to the terms of the Antarctic Treaty.

The treaty was signed by 12 countries in 1961, with all of them putting aside their territorial claims for about 30 years to reserve this continent for peaceful research. The treaty is now participated by 8 more nations also receiving full voting powers while an additional 18 counties consented to abide by the laws while holding only observer role. Among the treaty nations, there are meetings held every two years. A plan was able to be created by the organization and it stipulated that strictly regulated exploration and exploitation can be achieved, on the mineral resources of the entire Antarctica. They now get harassed with so many challenges thrown their way especially with matters on indemnification, base proliferation, marine and air safety, as well as facilities for medical and rescue missions. Visit this site for further information on antarctica vacations.

With the arrival of the austral summer season, 30 ships or even more aiming to make a call to Palmer usher in, at each occasion, about 100 travelers. Uncontrolled tourism often seems to be like a wild animal. An attempt to ban tourists from visiting last year by the Science Foundation as they disrupted the research operations last year was short lived. The ban was quickly removed as soon as prominent Americans pushed to be informed of how tax dollars are being utilized.

A medical corpsman, part of the station’s staff, mans small room which can accommodate around four dozen people whenever they need treatment. Its strength is not in handling maritime tragedies. And station workers said only fair weather prevented a disaster. Workers all know that the inflatable open rafts did not have its motors and oars anymore when they examined the sunken cruise ship. It was a calm day and they could easily be pulled back to shore using small work boats. Workers share that this could have been blown out to sea with the raging Antarctic weather or have overturned, making things worse.

Not wasting any time, the National Science Foundation responded to the oil spill by dispatching navy and civilian pollution control experts to use specialized equipment weighing 52 tons and clean up the mess as much as they can to limit the repercussions of the oil spill disaster. The cost of the mission amounted to more than $2 million. Navies from Chile and Argentina are sent in also spearhead expensive cleaning missions. Even with the conclusion of the clean up drive was middle of March, getting rid of all that oil is impossible and it will keep pumping out the dreadful poison as the ship disintegrates and there is also a risk that once a storm rages in the winter, higher levels of oil can be expected to pour out. Experts aver that the cost of hauling the wreckage away is very expensive.

The area of the spill teems with wildlife, including penguins, skuas, cormorants, Arctic terns and other birds. Many whales and seas swim through the bay. Indirect evidence linking the death of penguins and birds to the spill has been established by most scientists, but then the extent of the damage is yet to be finalized. Experts on research from the countries Chile, America and Argentina have arrived to study the repercussions of the spill to the environment. There is no chance of damages to be claimed while it will take very long to be finished.

Only the nations Argentina, Chile and Great Britain on the Antarctic Peninsula can seek compensation for damages and since the United States has no property rights to the area at or the one surrounding palmer station, they are not eligible for any compensation. It was announced by Chile that during the coming Antarctic Treaty, they will make sure that each nation has to contribute financially whenever an environmental disaster strikes. For the costs on spill and accident clean up missions, an agreement on cost sharing must be made, along with the organization of an international emergency coordinating council and these are all being planned by the people from the Science Foundation.
