Sydney Harbour has a rich history. The foreshores were settled by Aborigines going back 50,000 years but European contact wasn't until much later. Between 1606 and 1770, some 54 ships from a range of European nations made contact. Many of these were merchant ships from the celebrated Dutch East Indies Company. They included the ships of Abel Tasman who charted some of the north, west and south coasts of “New Holland” – as Australia was then known.
In 1770, the English captain and navigator James Cook charted the Australian east coast in his ship Endeavour and took possession of the land naming the eastern coast “New South Wales”.

The Gentleman's Travel Club (GTC) was created after one of the founders became seriously ill, an illness brought on by stress. He realized that he had to escape or die. Whilst recuperating, he asked himself what he really needed in his year, to be able to deal with the stresses and pressures of business life.
He knew it had to be a case of “no-holds-barred-no expense spared”.
After ten years of trial and error during which time he tried, amongst others, monastic retreats, seclusion on a mountain, walking the desert and yoga; none of these gave him the inner relaxation and feeling of absolute well-being he needed.

“Farm Cove” – in the modern day “Botanical Gardens” was the original farm of the First Fleet. Nine acres of corn was established on either side of a small stream. Nearby “Garden Island” was cleared by the crew of HMS Sirius as a garden for the ship's company. It became a naval base in 1856. You can still see a rigging shed, sail loft, barracks, stores and sick bay that date to 1880's.
“Fort Denison” – in the middle of the harbor – is Sydney's Alcatraz. It was originally called “Pinchgut” and was used as a penal island. The first convict was sent there on 8th February 1788 for stealing biscuits. The original sandstone cliffs were quarried to build the fort and tower in 1857 to defend Sydney against a threat from Russian warships.
